Renewable Capacity Reached Approximately 5.2 Terawatts

The global expansion of clean energy can also be seen in the amount of renewable generation
capacity being installed.
According to the reported figures, approximately 693 gigawatts of new renewable capacity were
added during 2025. This was the largest annual addition recorded to date.
By the end of 2025, total global renewable power capacity had reached approximately 5.2
terawatts. Renewable technologies accounted for nearly half of all installed electricity generation
capacity worldwide.
Renewables also represented the majority of new power capacity added during the year,
confirming that most new electricity infrastructure is increasingly being built around cleaner
energy sources.
It is important to understand the difference between installed capacity and actual electricity
generation. Renewable sources may represent close to half of global installed capacity, but their
share of electricity generation was approximately 31.7% in 2024.
This difference exists because solar and wind generation depend on weather conditions, daylight
hours, grid availability, energy storage and the overall utilisation of installed systems.
